A New Zealand classic featuring a memorable main character.
Almost every New Zealand family has heard of Lynley Dodd's classic character Hairy Maclary and his famous canine friends. In the fifth book in this series, a routine visit to the vet turns into chaos after Hairy Maclary has an unfortunate run-in with a bad-tempered cockatoo named Cassie, and her troublesome beak...
If your kids are fans of Hairy Maclary and his everyday misadventures, then they'll enjoy this story.
When I was young, I heard a lot of Lynley Dodd's stories featuring Hairy Maclary, so any of her books would be a great choice for your own kids, especially since she's still writing today.
This book has a lot of appeal for both kids and parents, as kids will enjoy seeing the disaster that rapidly unfolds in the waiting room (and will also enjoy meeting characters like Geezer the goat and Barnacle Beasley the dog), while parents will enjoy reading this classic NZ story to their kids.
There are also lots of Lynley Dodd's famous illustrations on every page, featuring lots of details for kids and parents to find (including a cameo from a certain yellow-eyed tom cat)...
Overall, this is a classic story from an iconic New Zealand author, and a great choice for Hairy Maclary fans young and old.
